01. What Is the Media Database

Most press coverage doesn’t happen because a journalist came looking for you. It happens because someone took the initiative to reach out with the right story, to the right person, at the right time. The PitchResponse Media Database is the tool that makes that possible.

What It Is #

The Media Database is a searchable directory of over 200,000 journalists, editors, and media contributors spanning industries, beats, and geographies across the United States and beyond. Each profile contains detailed information about the journalist: where they write, what topics they cover, and how to contact them directly.

With the Media Database, you can search for journalists relevant to your story, review their profiles to confirm they are a good fit, and send a pitch directly from the PitchResponse platform. Everything happens in one place.

How It Differs from JournoRequests / Opportunities #

PitchResponse offers two distinct approaches to earning media coverage, and it helps to understand how they work together.

JournoRequests is the reactive approach. Journalists post requests (also called opportunities) for expert sources and story contributors, and you respond to the ones that fit your expertise. It is efficient and high-conversion, but you are working within someone else’s timeline and topic agenda.

The Media Database is the proactive approach. You decide what story you want told, find the journalists who cover that space, and pitch them your idea on your schedule. There is no waiting for the right opportunity to appear. You create it yourself.

The two approaches complement each other well. JournoRequests keeps a steady flow of reactive wins coming in, while the Media Database powers the strategic, initiative-driven campaigns that move the needle on your brand’s visibility.

Who It’s For #

The Media Database is built for anyone who wants to take a more proactive role in their media presence:

  • Businesses and brands launching products, announcements, or campaigns that need press coverage
  • Founders and executives building a thought leadership profile in their industry
  • Marketing and PR professionals managing outreach for clients across multiple verticals
  • Agencies that need a scalable, organized way to research and contact journalists on behalf of their clients

What Plan Do You Need? #

The Media Database is available with select plans that include the Media Database, which are currently separate from PitchResponse’s JournoRequests and link building plans. Each Media Database plan includes a set number of outreach emails per month, which determines how many journalists you can contact within your billing period.

To view current plan options and pricing, visit the PitchResponse Pricing page.

Where to Find It in the Platform #

Once you have a Media Database plan, you will access it from the main navigation under Media Outreach > Journalists. From there you can run searches, browse profiles, and send pitches. All of that is covered in the articles that follow.

To get started, see 02. Searching for Journalists for a walkthrough of the search filters and how to find the right contacts for your outreach.
